After a course of bad luck, things finally turned around for us.
Money was starting to get really tight a few months ago with Joe's car still needing repairs plus the fact that I wasn't working. I started applying for jobs and couldn't get hired if my life depended on it. I figured it wouldn't be hard considering it was around the time all the stores were doing their seasonal hiring... but nope. I literally applied everywhere (except restaurants since I don't have a food handler's permit) then finally got hired as a cashier at Dollar Tree. Not exactly the job I'd ideally want, of course, but some type of income was better than no income at all.
I decided I'd work at Dollar Tree in the mean time until I could get a better job elsewhere. A couple months went by when one day, I saw on my Facebook that La Palmera's status mentioned they were hiring. I e-mailed them my resume, got a call back the next day, went in for my interview, and the rest is history...
I am now an executive marketing assistant for La Palmera. Well, technically for Trademark Property, the company that owns La Palmera, but you get my point. My job is amazing and it almost isn't fair to call it a "job" or "work".
I work both in the management office and the information desk doing secretarial work, but I do a lot more than that. Besides updating the Facebook/Twitter accounts, I basically get paid to shop. I go to the various stores on our property and try on clothes, sample the various colognes, etc so I can get a general idea of what to be promoting to our buyers. We also hold these crazy fun events all the time that I partake in as well. Oh, and did I mention I get a bunch of discounts and free stuff all the time? Amazing.
Since high school (thanks Mrs. Rollins), I've always been told that I have a natural talent for this kind of stuff and marketing should be my "thing". I've always really enjoyed it but figured pharmacy was more practical. Now that I have this job and with the experience I've had so far, I think marketing actually is my "thing" and I think I just might have to make that late switch of changing my major. But another perk about my job?... if my major is business/marketing related, they pay for my tuition. :)
Now that I've been with the mall for a couple months now, Joe and I have been a lot less stressed. He's due for a promotion soon and we just bought him a Yamaha 600cc bike... so he's pretty content, too. I've been pulling in crazy hours at work so it's been nice being able to save some money.
Sephora will have it's Grand Opening tomorrow along with a La Palmera's Mix and Mingle event celebrating all the new renovations and to thank the community for their postive feedback and support. We'll have a bunch of giveaways and refreshments!
But anyway. If you're at the mall anytime, come see me. I'm off on Tuesdays and Wednesdays... and sometimes Sundays... but still. Try to come by. I'll hook you up with free valet parking coupons and whatever else I've got. :)
